Almost 30 writers from around New Jersey gathered at Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge, on Sunday, Oct. 26, for The Writers Circle annual Autumn Mini-Retreat.
The day opened with a welcome and words of inspiration from TWC Co-Directors Judith Lindbergh and Michelle Cameron.
“If you’re completely uncertain, there is nothing wrong with writing down whatever comes,” Lindbergh said. “And magical things will happen if you take the pressure of objective off your work and just let the words flow.”
Writers shared their goals for the day. Some sought a creative spark for a new project, others wanted to devote time to a piece of writing already in progress. One pair of writers planned to spend the day collaborating on a picture book manuscript. Another said she came to the retreat to work on “the longest mystery novel in the world.” (Cue laughter from the room). And one participant said she wanted to connect with other writers.
There were plenty of opportunities to do that over breakfast, lunch, or during breakout sessions.
Participants could spent the day writing independently or take workshops, which included generative writing exercises led by Cameron and a mindful yoga flow taught by children’s author Joanne Ruelos Diaz. And TWC staff member Sarah Paige Casarez, who is trained as an actor, directed a fun improv class that helped writers approach storytelling in new ways.
The event also featured optional one-on-one editorial critiques from TWC author-instructors. And of course – uninterrupted time to write in a beautiful setting. Lindbergh also invited writers to join her for a nature walk, with time to write in the woods.
“This is my third visit to Judith and Michelle’s magical day,” one attendee said. “The contacts, the pace, the flow of the program is perfect. It fulfilled my expectations!”
“A wonderful day speaking with others, practicing creativity and concentrating on words,” said another.
And one participant told us simply: “Thank you for your work in creating and sustaining [The Writers Circle].”
Being in community with all of you is what sustains us.
If you missed it, we’re already planning our return to Lord Stirling Park this spring. And stay tuned for details about our cozy winter writing retreat.
